Calella is a faithful reproduction of a traditional Catalan "bot de llum" - a small fishing boat used along the Mediterranean coast, especially in Catalonia. These boats were used for night fishing for sardines and other fish that were attracted by large gas lanterns mounted in the bow.
The model represents an approximately 5 metre long wooden boat that was usually manned by two people. A distinctive feature is the large stabilisers (squaws) that reduced the impact of the waves, and the unique rudder that was manoeuvred by rope through the lantern frame instead of a traditional steering system.
